[Creatio Japan] The History of Biblical Art

For a church that speaks the gospel, biblical art can be another language. In the Middle Ages, the Word was in a difficult language for the people, so it was widely expressed through biblical art. However, it was not the only time that the Word was confessed in forms of art.

In the Roman catacombs, believers who were to be martyred the next day expressed their faith in art as well. In that case, the painting was the last and only means of expressing the Word they believed. Symbols and paintings have also been an effective way to convey the Christian gospel to many Gentile converts after Constantine.

Like the painting ‘Road to Emmaus’, one can understand through the art about what the art is trying to depict without the complexity of words.
